ಗಾಯನವು ಧ್ವನಿಯಿಂದ ಸಾಂಗೀತಕ ಶಬ್ದಗಳನ್ನು ಉತ್ಪಾದಿಸುವ ಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಮತ್ತು ನಿರಂತರ ಸ್ವರಪ್ರಸ್ತಾರಪಾಲನೆ, ತಾಳ, ಮತ್ತು ಬಗೆಬಗೆಯ ಗಾಯನ ತಂತ್ರಗಳ ಬಳಕೆಯಿಂದ ಕ್ರಮಬದ್ಧ ಮಾತನ್ನು ವರ್ಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಡುವವನನ್ನು ಗಾಯಕ ಅಥವಾ ಹಾಡುಗಾರನೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಗಾಯಕರು ಸಂಗೀತ ವಾದ್ಯಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಇಲ್ಲದೆಯೇ ಹಾಡಬಹುದಾದ ಸಂಗೀತವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗಾಯನವನ್ನು ಹಲವುವೇಳೆ ಸಂಗೀತಗಾರರ ತಂಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಗಾಯಕವೃಂದ ಅಥವಾ ವಾದ್ಯಗಾರರ ಗೋಷ್ಠಿ. ಗಾಯಕರು ಒಬ್ಬರೇ ಹಾಡಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ಒಂಟಿ ವಾದ್ಯದಿಂದ ಸ್ವರಮೇಳ ವಾದ್ಯವೃಂದ ಅಥವಾ ದೊಡ್ಡ ವಾದ್ಯಗೋಷ್ಠಿವರೆಗೆ ಯಾವುದಾದರೂ/ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಜೊತೆಗೂಡಿ ಹಾಡಬಹುದು.

Different singing styles include art music such as opera and Chinese opera, Indian music, Greek music, Japanese music, and religious music styles such as gospel, traditional music styles, world music, jazz, blues, ghazal, and popular music styles such as pop, rock, and electronic dance music.
