ನೀರು ಎಲ್ಲ ಜೀವಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಗತ್ಯವಾದ ರುಚಿ-ರಹಿತ ವಸ್ತು. ಇದು ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲ್ಮೈಯ ಶೇ.೭೦ ಭಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಶುದ್ಧ ಕುಡಿಯಲು ಬಳಸಬಹುದಾದ ನೀರು ಕೇವಲ ಶೇ.೩ ರಷ್ಟು ಮಾತ್ರವೇ ಲಭ್ಯವಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಟ್ಟು ೧೪೦ ಕೋಟಿ ಘನ ಕಿಮೀ ಗಳಷ್ಟು ನೀರು ವಿವಿಧ ರೂಪಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೆಯೆಂದು ಅಂದಾಜು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಭಾಗ ಸಮುದ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಧ್ರುವ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಘನ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ, ಹಾಗೂ ಮೋಡ, ನೀರಾವಿ ಮೊದಲಾದ ರೂಪಗಳಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
