ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಭೂಮಿಯ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆಯ ಕಾಲವನ್ನು ವರ್ಷವನ್ನಾಗಿ ಗಣಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೇ ರೀತಿ ಬೇರೆ ಗ್ರಹಗಳಿಗೂ ವರ್ಷವನ್ನು ಗಣಿಸಬಹುದು. ಇದೇ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ(concept)ಯ ಆಧಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಅಂತರಿಕ್ಷ ವಸ್ತು ಬೇರೊಂದು ಅಂತರಿಕ್ಷ ವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಸುತ್ತ ಪ್ರದಕ್ಷಿಣೆ ಹಾಕುವ ಕಾಲವನ್ನೂ ವರ್ಷವೆಂದು ಲೆಕ್ಕಿಸಬಹುದು. ಭೂಮಿ ಸೂರ್ಯನ ಸುತ್ತ ಒಂದು ಸಾರಿ ಸುತ್ತಲು ೩೬೫ ಅಥವ ೩೬೬ ದಿನಗಳಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ೧ ವಷವೆಂದರೆ ೩೬೫ ಅಥವ ೩೬೬ ದಿನಗಳು.
