ജീവജാലങ്ങളിൽ സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ശിക്ഷണബോധത്തെയാണ് അച്ചടക്കം എന്ന വാക്കിനാൽ അർഥമാക്കുന്നത്. അച്ചടക്കം എന്ന പദം ഇംഗ്ളീഷിലെ ഡിസിപ്ളിന് (discipline) സമാനമായിട്ടാണ് സാധാരണ പ്രയോഗിച്ചുവരുന്നത്. ഡിസിപ്ളിൻ എന്ന പദത്തിന് പരിശീലനം, അധീനത്തിൽ കൊണ്ടുവരിക എന്നെല്ലാം അർഥങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഡിസിപ്ളിൻ പാലിക്കുന്നവനാണ് ഡിസൈപ്പിൾ (disciple). ഡിസിപ്ളിൻ എന്ന പദത്തിന് ഓരോ കാലത്തുണ്ടായ അർഥഭേദങ്ങളെയെല്ലാം കണക്കിലെടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് പെരുമാറ്റത്തിലും പ്രവൃത്തിയിലും പ്രത്യേകം അധ്യയനാഭ്യാസങ്ങൾ നൽകി ശിഷ്യരെയും അനുയായികളെയും കീഴുദ്യോഗസ്ഥൻമാരെയും സൈനികരെയും നിർദിഷ്ട പരിശീലനക്രമങ്ങളിൽ ഉറപ്പിച്ചുനിർത്തുന്ന പ്രക്രിയ എന്നും അച്ചടക്കത്തെ നിർവചിക്കാം. അച്ചിൽ - ഒരു നിർദിഷ്ട രൂപമാതൃകയിൽ - അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പെരുമാറ്റരീതിയിൽ അടങ്ങൽ എന്നും അച്ചം (ഭയം) കൊണ്ടുള്ള അടക്കം എന്നും അച്ചടക്കത്തിന് മലയാളമഹാനിഘണ്ടുവിൽ അർഥം പറഞ്ഞുകാണുന്നു.

Discipline is the self-control that is gained by requiring that rules or orders be obeyed, and the ability to keep working at something that is difficult. Disciplinarians believe that such self-control is of the utmost importance and enforce a set of rules that aim to develop such behavior. Such enforcement is sometimes based on punishment, although there’s a big difference between the two.
