നാലുപാടും കരയാൽ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ട വലിയ വ്യാപ്തിയുള്ള ജലാശയത്തിനാണ് തടാകം എന്നു പറയുക. ഭൂമിയിലെ മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ തടാകങ്ങളും ശുദ്ധജല തടാകങ്ങളാണ്. മിക്ക തടാകങ്ങളും ഉത്തരാർദ്ധത്തിൽ ഉയർന്ന അക്ഷാംശത്തിലാണ് കിടക്കുന്നത്. വലിയ തടാകങ്ങളെ ചിലപ്പോൾ ഉൾക്കടലുകൾ എന്നും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

A lake is a naturally occurring, relatively large and fixed body of water on the Earth's surface. It is localized in a basin or interconnected basins surrounded by dry land.
