युद्धातील एका संघर्षाला लढाई असे म्हणतात. युद्ध ही दीर्घ काल चालणारी घटना असते तर लढाई ही एका स्थळावर एक संघर्ष असे स्वरूप असलेली घटना असते. एका युद्धात अनेक लढाया असू शकतात. जसे मराठा साम्राज्य स्थापन होताना मोगलांशी अनेक लढाया झाल्या. पेशावरची लढाईत मराठ्यांनी दुराणी साम्राज्यावर विजय मिळवला. किंवा दुसरे महायुद्ध घडत असताना अनेक राष्ट्रात लढाया झाल्या. युद्ध व लढाई यातील रणनीतीत फरक असतो. युद्धात राजकारण, जागतिक दबाव इत्यादी भाग महत्त्वाचे असतात. लढाईत भौगोलिक रचना, सैनिक व त्यांची तत्कालिक मानसिकता, उपलब्ध असलेली माहिती व शस्त्रे, सैनिकांची व्युह रचना यांचा समावेश असतो.
