सांडपाणी म्हणजे अशुद्ध, वापरलेले पाणी. सांडपाणी घरांतून, उद्योगातून बाहेर पडते व हे पाणी पिण्यास अयोग्य असते.घराभोवती, रस्त्यात आणि गटारीत तुंबलेले सांडपाणी आरोग्यास घातक असते. तसेच त्याचा घाण वास येतो, रस्त्यावर त्या पाण्याने चिकचिक होऊन घसरडे होते आणि डासांना अंडी घालायला जागा मिळते. हे डास चावल्याने लोकांना मलेरियासारखे रोग होतात. अशा सांडपाण्याची विल्हेवाट लावण्यासाठी जमिनीत सांडपाणी जिरण्यासाठी परसबाग किंवा शोषखड्डा करता येतो. पाणी वापरताना त्या अनेक गोष्टी मिसळल्या जातात आणि ते पाणी अशुद्ध होते. हे पाणी जसेच्या तसे परत वापरता येत नाही. अशा अशुद्ध पाण्याला सांडपाणी म्हणतात. सांडपाणी हे शौचालय, न्हाणीघर, स्वयंपाकघर, धुणी-भांडी, कारखाने इ. ठिकाणी होणाऱ्या पाण्याच्या वापरातून निर्माण होते. सांडपाण्याची नीट विल्हेवाट लावण्याची गरज असते; ते न केल्यास नागरिकांचे आरोग्य धोक्यात येते. या पाण्याचा पर्यावरणावर देखील विपरित परिणाम होतो.पाणी आडवा पाणी जिरवा

In regions where toilet paper is used rather than bidets, that paper is also added to the sewage. Sewage contains macro-pollutants and micro-pollutants, and may also incorporate some municipal solid waste and pollutants from industrial wastewater.
