विवरण
A levee, dike, dyke, embankment, floodbank, or stop bank is a structure used to keep the course of rivers from changing and to protect against flooding of the area adjoining the river or coast. It is usually earthen and often runs parallel to the course of a river in its floodplain or along low-lying coastlines.
तटबंध (embankment), ऐसे बाँध अर्थात् पत्थर या कंक्रीट के पलस्तर से सुरक्षित, मिट्टी या मिट्टी तथा कंकड़ इत्यादि के मिश्रण से बनाए तटों या ऊँचे, लंबें टीलों, को कहते हैं, जिनसे पानी के बहाव को रोकने अथवा सीमित करने का काम लिया जाता है, जैसे
- (१) किसी नदी, नहर या अन्य प्रकार के पानी के बहाव को निश्चित सीमा के भीतर रखने के लिये,
- (२) दलदली भूमि में जल की बाढ़ को रोकने अथवा भूमि के पृष्ठ से ऊँचे स्थित गढ़े, या जल निकास मार्ग, की दीवार का काम करने के लिये,
- (३) समुद्र के किनारे या ज्वार मुहानों पर तट की रक्षा के लिये,
- (४) किसी जलाशय के पानी को रोकने के लिए अथवा
- (५) किसी झील के पानी की सतह को ऊँचा उठाने के लिये।
