In its most common sense, methodology is the study of research methods. However, the term can also refer to the methods themselves or to the philosophical discussion of associated background assumptions. A method is a structured procedure for bringing about a certain goal, like acquiring knowledge or verifying knowledge claims. This normally involves various steps, like choosing a sample, collecting data from this sample, and interpreting the data. The study of methods concerns a detailed description and analysis of these processes. It includes evaluative aspects by comparing different methods. This way, it is assessed what advantages and disadvantages they have and for what research goals they may be used. These descriptions and evaluations depend on philosophical background assumptions. Examples are how to conceptualize the studied phenomena and what constitutes evidence for or against them. When understood in the widest sense, methodology also includes the discussion of these more abstract issues.

प्रणाली विज्ञान (Methodology) व्यवस्थित रूप से किसी अध्ययन क्षेत्र में प्रयोग होने वाली विधियों के विश्लेषण को कहते हैं। इसमें वैज्ञानिक जानकारी पर नहीं बल्कि उस जानकारी को प्राप्त करने के लिये जिन सिद्धांतों, तकनीकों और प्रणालियों को प्रयोगित किया जाता है उनपर दृष्टि डाली जाती है। उदाहरण के लिये यदी पृथ्वी के वायुमण्डल में आर्गन गैस की मात्रा का अनुमान लगाना हो तो प्रणाली विज्ञान में इस मात्रा और उसके अर्थ पर केन्द्रित होने के स्थान पर इस मात्रा का अनुमान लगाने की विधियों और उपकरणों का अध्ययन करा जाता है। जब कोई नया वैज्ञानिक तथ्य घोषित होता है तो अक्सर उस तथ्य का पता लगाने में प्रयोग होने वाली प्रणालियों की भी परख की जाती है और यदी वे अपार्याप्त हों तो तथाकथित तथ्य को अमान्य भी समझा जा सकता है।
