The ocean is the body of salt water that covers approx. 70.8% of Earth. In English, the term ocean also refers to any of the large bodies of water into which the world ocean is conventionally divided. Distinct names are used to identify five different areas of the ocean: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Antarctic/Southern, and Arctic. The ocean contains 97% of Earth's water and is the primary component of Earth's hydrosphere, thus the ocean is essential to life on Earth. The ocean influences climate and weather patterns, the carbon cycle, and the water cycle by acting as a huge heat reservoir.

महासागर लवणीय जल का पिण्ड है जो पृथ्वी के लगभग 70.8% मे विस्तृत है और इसमें पृथ्वी का 97% जल समाहित है। एक महासागर जल के किसी भी बड़े निकाय को भी सन्दर्भित कर सकता है जिसमें विश्व महासागर पारम्परिक रूप से विभाजित है। महासागर के पांच विभिन्न क्षेत्रों की परिचय करने के लिए भिन्न नामों का प्रयोग किया जाता है: प्रशान्त (वृहत्तम), अट्लाण्टिक, भारतीय, दक्षिणी और उत्तरध्रुवीय महासागर (क्षुद्रतम)। समुद्री जल ग्रह के लगभग 361,000,000 किमी² में विस्तृत है। महासागर पृथ्वी के जलमण्डल का प्रमुख घटक है, और इसलिए पृथ्वी पर जीवन का अभिन्नांग है। विशाल ताप भण्डार के रूप में कार्य करते हुए, महासागर जलवायु और मौसम के स्वरूप, कार्बन चक्र और जल चक्र को प्रभावित करता है।
