कथा NOUN

  1. वह जो कही जाय । बात । विशेष—न्याय में यथार्थ निश्चय या विपक्षी के पराजय के लिये जो बात कही जाय । इसके तीन भेद हैं—बाद, जल्प, वितंडा ।
  2. धर्मविषयक व्याख्यान या आख्यान ।
  3. उपन्यास का एक भेद । विशेष—इसमें पूर्वपीठिका और उत्तरपीठिका होती है । पूर्वपीठिका में एक वक्ता और एक या अनेक बनाए जाते हैं । श्रोता की ओर से ऐसा उत्साह दिखलाया जाता है कि पढ़नेवालों को भी उत्साह होता है । वक्ता के मुँह से सारी कहानी कहलाई जाती है । कथा की समाप्ति में उत्तरपीठिका होती है । इसमें वक्ता और श्रोता का उठ जाना आदि उत्तरदशा दिखाई जाती है ।
