खलनायक (Villain) किसी कहानी में "बुराई" का चरित्र होता है, चाहे वह कोई ऐतिहासिक कथा हो या विशेष रूप से, कपोलकल्पना की कोई कृति हो। खलनायक, नायक का विरोधी होता है जो अन्य पात्रों पर नकारात्मक प्रभाव डालता है। किसी महिला खलनायक को खलनायिका कहा जाता है। एक विरोधी के रूप में उसकी भूमिका में, खलनायक एक बाधा के रूप में कार्य करता है और नायक को उसे पराजित करने के लिए संघर्ष करना पड़ता है। खलनायक उन विशेषताओं की मिसाल बनता है जो नायक के विरोध में हैं और इससे खलनायक और नायक के लक्षणों में भेद स्थापित होता है।

Random House Unabridged Dictionary defines such a character as "a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime; scoundrel; or a character in a play, novel, or the like, who constitutes an important evil agency in the plot". The antonym of a villain is a hero.
