किसी वस्तु का वह गुण जो उसकी गति की अवस्था में किसी भी प्रकार के परिवर्तन का विरोध करता है, जड़त्व कहलाता है। 'गति की अवस्था में परिवर्तन' का मतलब है - उसकी चाल में परिवर्तन, उसकी गति की दिशा में परिवर्तन, या चाल और दिशा दोनों में परिवर्तन। दूसरे शब्दों में, जड़त्व ही वह गुण है जिसके कारण वस्तु बिना दिशा बदले, एक सरल रेखा में, समान वेग से चलती रहती है। जड़त्व का माप द्रव्यमान होता हैं। अगर किसी वस्तु का द्रव्यमान अधिक है तो उस वस्तु की गति का प्रतिरोध भी अधिक होगा।

Inertia is the tendency of objects in motion to stay in motion and objects at rest to stay at rest, unless a force causes its speed or direction to change. It is one of the primary manifestations of mass, one of the core quantitative properties of physical systems. Newton writes:
