Buddhism, also known as Buddha Dharma and Dharmavinaya, is an Indian religion and philosophical tradition based on teachings attributed to the Buddha. It is the world's fourth-largest religion, with over 520 million followers, known as Buddhists, who comprise seven percent of the global population. Buddhism originated in the eastern Gangetic plain as a śramaṇa–movement in the 5th century BCE, and gradually spread throughout much of Asia via the Silk Road.

બોદ્ધ ધર્મ એક ભારતીય ધર્મ છે, ૫૦ કરોડ થી પણ વધુ અનુયાયીઓ સાથે આ વિશ્વનો ચોથો સૌથી મોટો ધર્મ છે. બોદ્ધ ધર્મ નો ઉદય ભારતમાં થયો હતો. આ ધર્મનો ઉદ્ભવ ઇ.સ. પૂર્વેની ૬ઠ્ઠી થી ૪થી સદી દરમિયાન થયો હોવાનું મનાય છે. ગૌતમ બુદ્ધ આ ધર્મના સ્થાપક હતા. ઇ.સ. પૂર્વે ૫૬૩ના વર્ષમાં બુદ્ધનો જન્મ વર્તમાન નેપાળના લુંબિની નગરમાં શાકય પરિવારમાં થયો હતો. જન્મ સમયે તેમનું નામ સિદ્ધાર્થ હતું. જન્મના કેટલાક દિવસો બાદ માતાનું અવસાન થતાં તેમનો ઉછેર તેમની માસી ગૌતમીએ કર્યો હતો. આથી તેને લોકોએ ગૌતમ કહીને બોલાવવાનું શરૂ કર્યું હતું. ગૌતમ બુદ્ધને શાક્યમુનિ પણ કહેવાય છે.
