The abacus, also called a counting frame, is a calculating tool which has been used since ancient times. It was used in the ancient Near East, Europe, China, and Russia, millennia before the adoption of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. The exact origin of the abacus has not yet emerged. It consists of rows of movable beads, or similar objects, strung on a wire. They represent digits. One of the two numbers is set up, and the beads are manipulated to perform an operation such as addition, or even a square or cubic root.

गिनतारा जिसे गणक सांचा भी कह सकते हैं, एक गणन उपकरण होता है, जिसका प्रयोग एशिया के भागों में अंकगणितीय प्रकायों के लिये किया जाता था। आज, गिनतारा अपने वर्तमाण रूप में, तारों पर बंधे मोतियों वाले एक बांस फ्रेम के रूप में दिखाई पड़ता है, लेकिन वे मूल रूप से ये फली के बीजों या पत्थरों या लकड़ी, पत्थर या धातु की गोलियों को रेत में खांचों/क्यारियों में चला कर प्रयोग किये जाते थे। लिखित प्रणाली के आरंभ से शताब्दियों पूर्व इनका प्रयोग किया जाता था। आज भी एशिया, अफ़्रीका आदि कई स्थानों पर व्यापारियों द्वारा इसका प्रयोग किया जाता है। इसके प्रयोक्ता को गिनतारारे कहते हैं। इसका उपयोग सबसे पहले चीन ने किया था
