In phonology, an allophone is one of multiple possible spoken sounds – or phones – used to pronounce a single phoneme in a particular language. For example, in English, the voiceless plosive and the aspirated form are allophones for the phoneme, while these two are considered to be different phonemes in some languages such as Central Thai. Similarly, in Spanish, and are allophones for the phoneme, while these two are considered to be different phonemes in English.

भाषाविज्ञान में सहस्वानिक ध्वनियाँ, जिन्हें अंग्रेज़ी में एलोफ़ोन (allophone) कहा जाता है, वह ध्वनियाँ होती हैं जो किसी भाषा के बोलने वालों के लिए एक ही वर्ण या वर्ण-समूह को बोलने के भिन्न तरीक़े हों। सहस्वानिकी में बोलने वालों को स्वयं ज्ञात नहीं होता के वह एक ही वर्ण को अलग-अलग प्रकार से उच्चारित कर रहें हैं। उदहारण के तौर पर अंग्रेज़ी में 'ट', 'त', 'थ' और 'ठ' में सहस्वनिकी होती है। अंग्रेज़ी मातृभाषी 'ताली', 'थाली', 'टाली' और 'ठाली' में अक्सर फ़र्क नहीं बता सकते क्योंकि उनके लिए यह सारे स्वर अंग्रेज़ी अक्षर 't' से समन्धित हैं और उन्हें सब एक ही जैसे सुनाई देते हैं। उसी तरह हिंदी में 'v' और 'w' सहस्वनिक ध्वनियाँ होती हैं। हिंदी मातृभाषी अक्सर 'wow' और 'vow' को एक जैसा उच्चारित करते हैं, जो अंग्रेज़ी में ग़लत है।
