A catchphrase is a phrase or expression recognized by its repeated utterance. Such phrases often originate in popular culture and in the arts, and typically spread through word of mouth and a variety of mass media. Some become the de facto or literal "trademark" or "signature" of the person or character with whom they originated, and can be instrumental in the typecasting of a particular actor. Catchphrases are often humorous, but are never long enough or structured enough to be jokes in themselves. However, a catchphrase can be the punch line of a joke, or a callback reminder of a previous joke.

सूत्रवाक्य या तकिया कलाम एक ऐसे वाक्य या वाक्यांश को बोलते हैं जो बार-बार किसी व्यक्ति या चीज़ के सन्दर्भ में सुने जाने से लोक संस्कृति में पहचाना जाने लगता है। दूसरे शब्दों में यह केवल एक वाक्य न रह के एक सूत्र बन गया हो। मसलन, "कुत्ते-कमीने, मैं तेरा ख़ून पी जाऊँगा" हिन्दी फिल्म अभिनेता धर्मेन्द्र का तकिया कलाम माना जाता है। सूत्रवाक्य और नारों में एक समानता यह है कि दोनों के शब्दों को बहुत से लोग पहचानते हैं, लेकिन एक अंतर यह है के नारों का मक़सद लोगों को किसी कार्य को करने के लिए उत्तेजित करना होता है, जबकि यह किसी तकिया कलाम के साथ ज़रूरी नहीं है। इंदिरा गांधी का "ग़रीबी हटाओ" नारा भी था और उनका तकिया कलाम भी था।
