Description

The raccoon, also spelled racoon and sometimes called the common raccoon or northern raccoon to distinguish it from the other species, is a mammal native to North America. It is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm, and a body weight of 5 to 26 kg. Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur, which insulates it against cold weather. The animal's most distinctive features include its extremely dexterous front paws, its facial mask, and its ringed tail, which are common themes in the mythologies of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas surrounding the species. The raccoon is noted for its intelligence, as studies show that it is able to remember the solution to tasks for at least three years. It is usually nocturnal and omnivorous, eating about 40% invertebrates, 33% plants, and 27% vertebrates.

रैकून उत्तर अमेरिका में मिलने वाला एक माध्यम अकार का स्तनधारी जानवर है। इसके शरीर की लम्बाई 40 से 70 सेंटीमीटर होती है और इसका वज़न 3.5 से 9 किलो होता है। रैकून एक निशाचरी जीव है और सर्वाहारी है। इसका शरीर भूरे बालों से ढाका होता है और इसके चेहरे पर आँखों के ऊपर काले रंग के बाल एक नक़ाब जैसा नक़्शा बनाते हैं। रैकून अपनी चतुरता के लिए मशहूर हैं और वे अक्सर मनुष्यों से खाना और अन्य चीजें चोरी कर लेते हैं। वैज्ञानिक अध्ययन ने दिखाया है के इनकी स्मरण-शक्ति भी बहुत तेज़ है। इनके सामने के दो पंजे ऊँगलीनुमा हाथों की तरह होते हैं और इनसे रैकूनों को चीजें पकड़ने, खींचने और तोड़ने में काफ़ी सक्षमता मिल जाती है।
