जई NOUN
- जौ की जाति का एक अन्न । विशेष—इसका पौधा जौ के पौधे से बहुत मिलता जुलता है और जौ के पोधै से अधिक बढ़ता है । जौ, गेहूँ आदि की तरह यह अन्न भी वर्षा के अंत में बोया जाता है । बोने के प्रायः एक महीने बाद इसके हरे डंठल काट लिए जाते हैं जो पशुओं के चारे के काम आते हैं । काटने के बाद डंठल फिर बढ़ते हैं और थोड़े ही दिनों में फिर काटने के योग्य हो जाते हैँ । इस प्रकार जई की फसल तीन महीने में तीनबार हरी काटी जाती है और अंत मे अन्न के लिये छोड़ दी जाती है । चौथी बार इसमें प्रायः हाथ भर या इससे कुछ कम लंबी बालें लगती है । इन्हीं वालों में जई के दाने लगते हैं । बोने के प्रायः साढ़े तीन या चार महीने बाद इसकी फसल तैयार हो जाती है । फसल पकने पर पीली हो जाती है और पूरी तरह पकने से कुछ पहले ही काट ली जाती है, क्योंकि अधिक पकने से इसके दाने झड़ जाते हैं और डंठल भी निकम्मे हो जाते है । एक बीघे मे प्रायः बारह तेरह मन अर और अठारह मन डंठल होते हैं । इसके लिये दोमट भूमि अच्छी होतो है और अधिक सिंचाई की आवश्यकता पड़ती है । इस देश में जई बहुधा घोड़ो आदि को ही खिलाई जाती है, पर जिन देशों में गेहुँ, जौ आदि अच्छे अन्न नहीं होते वहाँ इसके आटे की रोटियाँ भी बनती हैं । इसके हरे डंठल गेहूँ और जौ के भूसे से अधिक पोषक होते है और गौएँ, भैंसें और घोड़े आदि उन्हें बड़े चाव से खात है ।
- जौ का छोटा अंकुर । विशेष—हिंदुओं के यहां नवरात्र में देवी की स्थापना के साथ थोड़े से जौ भी वोए जाते है । अष्टमी या नवमी के दिन वे अंकुर उखाड़ लिए जाते है और ब्राह्मण उन्हें लेकर मंगल— स्वरूप अपने यजमानों की भेंट करते है । उन्हीं अंकुरों को जई कहते है । इस अर्थ में इनके साथ 'देना' 'खोंसना' आदि क्रियाओं का भी प्रयोग होता है ।
- उन फलों की बतिया या फली जिनमें बतिया के साथ फूल भी लगा रहता है । जैसे, खीरे की जई, कुम्हड़े की जई ।
