Poetry is a form of literary art that uses aesthetic and often rhythmic qualities of language to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, literal or surface-level meanings. Any particular instance of poetry is called a poem and is written by a poet. Poets use a variety of techniques called poetic devices, such as assonance, alliteration, euphony and cacophony, onomatopoeia, rhythm, and sound symbolism, to produce musical or incantatory effects. Most poems are formatted in verse: a series or stack of lines on a page, which follow a rhythmic or other deliberate pattern. For this reason, verse has also become a synonym for poetry.

ಕವಿತೆ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಉಪಯೋಗದ ಒಂದು ಕಲೆ. ಭಾಷೆಯ ಉಪಯೋಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಅರ್ಥದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅಥವಾ ಅರ್ಥದ ಬದಲು ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾವನಾತ್ಮಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊರತರುವ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಇದು. ಕವಿತೆಯು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿ ರಚಿತವಾಗಿರಬಹುದು ಅಥವಾ ಸಂಗೀತ, ನಾಟಕ ಮುಂತಾದ ಕಲೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಉಪಯೋಗಿಸಲ್ಪಡಬಹುದು.

• ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಅಥವಾ ಆರು ಸಾಲಿನ ಚೌಕಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
• ಕವನದಲ್ಲಿ ಶೃಂಗಾರವನ್ನು ಬಿಂಬಿಸುವ ರಮಣೀಯ ಪದಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ.
• ಪ್ರತಿ ಪದಗಳ ಬಳಕೆ ಓದುಗನಿಗೆ ಮುದ ನೀಡುವಂತೆ ರಚಿತವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
• ನವ, ನವೀನವಾದ ಪದಗಳ ಬಳಕೆಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಆಧ್ಯತೆ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ.
• ಇದರಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿಷಯವಸ್ತು ಶೃಂಗಾರ ಹಾಸ್ಯದಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಲಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
• ಆಧುನಿಕತೆಗೆ ಒತ್ತು ನೀಡಿ ರಚಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
• ಸರಳ ಹಾಗೂ ಸುಂದರವಾದ ಪದಬಳಕೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
• ಕೆಲವುಕಡೆ ವಿವಿಧ ರೀತಿಯ ಪ್ರಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡಿ ರಚಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
• ಎರಡು ಅಥವಾ ಮೂರು ಸಾಲಿನಿಂದ ರಚಿತವಾದ ಕವನಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೈಕು/ಹನಿಗವನ/ಚುಟುಕು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇದನ್ನು ಮನೋಹರವಾಗಿ, ಲಘುವಾಗಿ ರಚಿಸಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ.
• ವರ್ಣರಂಜಿತ ಪದಗಳಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದ್ದು ಸಕಾರ ಮತ್ತು ವಿರಾಳ ಭಾವವನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಫಲತೆಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡಿರುತ್ತದೆ.
