ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ವೆಂಬುದು ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು, ಸೇವೆಗಳನ್ನು ,ಅಥವಾ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಉದ್ದೇಶಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿ ವಿನಿಮಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಿಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ವಿಶಾಲ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಅಥವಾ ವ್ಯವಹಾರವೆಂದೂ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ-ವಹಿವಾಟು ನಡೆಸುವಂತಹ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಅದರ ಕಾರ್ಯರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುವುದು. ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯದ ಮೂಲ ರೂಪ ವಿನಿಮಯವಾಗಿದೆ, ಸರಕುಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸೇವೆಗಳ ನೇರ ವಿನಿಮಯ. ಹೀಗೆ, ವಿನಿಮಯವು ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಲೋಹಗಳು, ಬೆಲೆಬಾಳುವ ಲೋಹಗಳು ,ಖರೀದಿಪತ್ರ, ಹಾಗು ಕಾಗದ ರೂಪದ ನಗದನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಇವುಗಳ ಬದಲಿಗೆ ಆಧುನಿಕ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳು, ಬಹುಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ವಿನಿಮಯ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಮೂಲಕ ವ್ಯವಹಾರವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿದರು, ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ಹಣ.ಅಥವಾ ನಗದು ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು. ಇದರಿಂದ, ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದನ್ನು ಮಾರುವುದ ರಿಂದ, ಅಥವಾ ಗಳಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸಬಹುದು. ಹಣದ ಅನ್ವೇಷಣೆ (ಹಾಗು ನಂತರ ಖಾತೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಹಣ, ನೋಟು ಹಾಗು ಹಣದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಇತರ ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ಕಾರ್ಡ್ ಗಳು, ಬಹುಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸುಲಭೀಕರಿಸಿ, ಅದನ್ನು ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸಿತು. ಇಬ್ಬರು ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ವ್ಯವಹಾರವನ್ನು ಉಭಯಪಕ್ಷೀಯ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.ಅದೇ ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ನಡೆಯುವ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಬಹುಪಕ್ಷೀಯ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
