In medicine, a pulse represents the tactile arterial palpation of the cardiac cycle (heartbeat) by fingertips. The pulse may be palpated in any place that allows an artery to be compressed near the surface of the body, such as at the neck, wrist, at the groin, behind the knee, near the ankle joint, and on foot. The radial pulse is commonly measured using three fingers. This has a reason: the finger closest to the heart is used to occlude the pulse pressure, the middle finger is used get a crude estimate of the blood pressure, and the finger most distal to the heart is used to nullify the effect of the ulnar pulse as the two arteries are connected via the palmar arches. The study of the pulse is known as sphygmology.

ഹൃദയമിടിപ്പ് മൂലം ധമനികളിൽ ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന സ്പന്ദനം സ്പർശത്തിലൂടെ തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നതാണ് Pulse അഥവാ നാഡീസ്പന്ദനം/നാഡീമിടിപ്പ് എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്. നെഞ്ചിടിപ്പ്, ഹൃദയമിടിപ്പ്, തുടിപ്പ്, ഹൃദയസ്പന്ദനം എന്നെല്ലാം പറയുന്നത് പൾസ് തന്നെയാണ്. ശരീരോപരിതലത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള ഏതെങ്കിലും അസ്ഥിക്ക് സമീപത്തുകൂടി പോകുന്ന ധമനി, ആ അസ്ഥിതിയോട് ചേർത്തുപിടിച്ച് സ്പന്ദനം എണ്ണിയാണ് പൾസ് അളക്കുന്നത്. കഴുത്തിലെ കരോട്ടിഡ് ധമനി, കൈമുട്ടിലെ ബ്രെകിയൽ ആർട്ടറി, കണങ്കൈയ്യിലെ റേഡിയൽ ധമനി, നാഭി പ്രദേശത്തെ ഫീമൊറൽ ആർട്ടറി എന്നിവ സ്പന്ദന നിർണ്ണയത്തിനു സാധാരണ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നവയിൽ ചിലതാണ്. ഒരു മിനിറ്റിൽ എണ്ണുന്ന നാഡീസ്പന്ദനം തന്നെയാണ് ഒരു മിനിറ്റിലെ ഹൃദയത്തിന്റെ സ്പന്ദനവും. നെഞ്ചിനോട് ചെവി ചേർത്തു വച്ചോ സ്റ്റെത്ത്സ്ക്കോപ്പിലൂടെയോ ഹൃദയമിടിപ്പ്/ പൾസ് നിർണ്ണയിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. പൾസിന്റെ പഠനശാഖയ്ക്ക് സ്ഫിഗ്മോളജി (sphygmology) എന്നു പറയുന്നു.
