ബൊവിഡേയെന്ന കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഒരംഗമാണ് ആട് . ചെമ്മരിയാടുമായി അടുത്തബന്ധമുണ്ട്. ഏറ്റവും ആദ്യമായി മനുഷ്യർ മെരുക്കിയെട്യുത്ത ജീവികളിലൊന്നാണ് ആട്. 300ലേറെ ഇനം ആടുകളുണ്ട്.മാംസത്തിനും പാലിനും തോലിനും രോമത്തിനുമായി മനുഷ്യൻ അവയെ ലോകത്തെല്ലായിടത്തും വളർത്താറുണ്ട്. 2011ലെ കണക്കുപ്രകാരം ലോകത്താകമാനം തൊണ്ണൂറ്റിരണ്ടു കോടിയിൽ ഏറെ ആടുകളുണ്ട്.
