కుటుంబం అనగా ఒకే గృహంలో నివసించే కొంత మంది మానవుల సమూహం. వీరు సాధారణంగా పుట్టుకతో లేదా వివాహముతో సంబంధమున్నవారు. మన సమాజంలో వివిధ మతపరమైన వివాహచట్టాలు కుటుంబవ్యవస్థను గుర్తించాయి. "కుటుంబం" అనే పదాన్ని మానవులకే కాకుండా ఇతర జంతు సమూహాలకు కూడా వాడుతారు. అనేక జంతుజాతులలో ఆడ, మగ జంతువులు వాటి పిల్లలు ఒక గుంపుగా సహజీవనం చేస్తుండడం గమనించవచ్చును. పెద్ద జంతువులు పిల్లజంతువులకు ఆహారం, రక్షణ కలిగించడం ఇలాంటి కుటుంబ వ్యవస్థలో మౌలికాంశంగా కనిపిస్తుంది.

Family is a group of people related either by consanguinity or affinity. It forms the basis for social order. The purpose of the family is to maintain the well-being of its members and of society. Ideally, families offer predictability, structure, and safety as members mature and learn to participate in the community. Historically, most human societies use family as the primary purpose of attachment, nurturance, and socialization.
