An acid is a molecule or ion capable of either donating a proton (i.e. hydrogen ion, H⁺), known as a Brønsted–Lowry acid, or forming a covalent bond with an electron pair, known as a Lewis acid.

अम्ल एक रासायनिक यौगिक है, जो जल में घुलकर हाइड्रोजन आयन (H+) देता है। इसका pH मान 7.0 से कम होता है। जोहान्स निकोलस ब्रोंसटेड और मार्टिन लॉरी द्वारा दी गई आधुनिक परिभाषा के अनुसार, अम्ल वह रासायनिक यौगिक है जो प्रतिकारक यौगिक (क्षार) को हाइड्रोजन आयन (H+) प्रदान करता है। जैसे- एसीटिक अम्ल और सल्फ्यूरिक अम्ल. अम्ल, ठोस, द्रव या गैस, किसी भी भौतिक अवस्था में पाए जा सकते हैं। वे शुद्ध रूप में या घोल के रूप में रह सकते हैं। जिस पदार्थ या यौगिक में अम्ल के गुण पाए जाते हैं वे (अम्लीय) कहलाते हैं। मानव आंत्र में हाइड्रोक्लोरिक अम्ल की अधिकता से होने वाली बीमारी को अम्लता या एसीडिटी कहते हैं। अम्ल नीले लिटमस को लाल कर देता है
