Delegation is the process of distributing and entrusting work to another person. In management or leadership within an organisation, it involves a manager aiming to efficiently distribute work, decision-making and responsibility to subordinate workers in an organization. Delegation may result in creation of an accountable chain of authority where authority and responsibility moves down in an organisational structure. Inefficient delegation may lead to micromanagement.

किसी उच्च अधिकारी द्वारा अधीनस्थ अधिकारी को विशिष्ट सत्ता एवं अधिकार प्रदान करना प्रत्यायोजन (Delegation) कहलाता है। यह प्रबन्धन के मूल संकल्पनाओं (कॉन्सेप्ट्स) में से एक है। ध्यान देने योग्य बात है कि कार्य के परिणाम के लिये वही व्यक्ति जिम्मेदार होता है जो उस कार्य को सम्पादित करने के लिये अपने अधिकार दूसरे को सौंपता है। प्रत्यायोजन के फलस्वरूप अधीनस्थ व्यक्ति को निर्णय लेने में सुविधा होती है। दूसरी तरफ अधिकारी का भार कुछ कम हो जाता है। अर्थात प्रत्यायोजन प्रशासनिक संगठन में विभिन्न स्तरों पर शक्तियों एवं दायित्वों के अनावश्यक ठहराव को रोकने की एक आन्तरिक प्रशासनिक प्रक्रिया है।
