Logic is the study of correct reasoning. It includes both formal and informal logic. Formal logic is the study of deductively valid inferences or logical truths. It examines how conclusions follow from premises due to the structure of arguments alone, independent of their topic and content. Informal logic is associated with informal fallacies, critical thinking, and argumentation theory. It examines arguments expressed in natural language while formal logic uses formal language. When used as a countable noun, the term "a logic" refers to a logical formal system that articulates a proof system. Logic plays a central role in many fields, such as philosophy, mathematics, computer science, and linguistics.

ஏரணம் அல்லது அளவையியல் அல்லது தருக்கவியல் (Logic) என்பது அறிவடிப்படையில் ஓர் உண்மை ஆகும், ஒரு பொருள் பற்றி அது ஏற்கக்கூடியது என்று அறியவும், ஒரு முடிவுக்கு வரவும், உறுதியாக நிலைநிறுத்தவும் பயன்படும் ஓர் அடிப்படைக் கருத்தியல் முறைகளைப் பற்றிய ஓர் அறிவுத்துறையாகும். ஏரணம் மெய்யியலின் ஒரு முக்கியமான துறை. ஏரணம் என்னும் தமிழ்ச்சொல் ஏல் = ஏற்றுக்கொள், இயல்வது, பொருந்துவது என்பதில் இருந்து ஏல்-> ஏர் ஏரணம் என்றாயிற்று ஏரணம் என்பது படிப்படியாய் அறிவடுக்க முறையில் ஏலும், ஏலாது என்று கருத்துக்களைப் படிப்படியாய் முறைப்படி தேர்ந்து மேலே சென்று உயர் முடிபுகளைச் சென்றடையும் முறை மற்றும் கருத்தியல் கூறுகள் கொண்ட ஒரு துறையாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. ஆங்கிலத்தில் இதனை Logic (லா’சிக்) என்று கூறுவர். மேற்குலக மெய்யியலில் லாச்யிக் (ஏரணம்) என்பது கிரேக்க மொழிச் சொல்லாகிய லோகோசு என்ற சொல்லில் இருந்து பெறப்பட்டது ஆகும். இதன் பொருள் “சொல், எண்ணம், சொற்கருத்தாடல், காரணம், கொள்கை” " என்பதாகும்.
